Appointments to Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene announced

     The Government today (March 25) announced that the Chief Executive had re-appointed Mr Felix Fong Wo as the Chairman of the Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene for a term of two years with effect from April 1, 2011.  Mr Fong is a lawyer and has been the chairman of the advisory council since 2009.

     Meanwhile, 14 serving non-official members were also re-appointed and a new non-official member, Mrs Sandra Mak Wong Siu-chun, was appointed. All the appointments are for a term of two years from April 1, 2011, to March 31, 2013.

     Mrs Mak is the chief executive officer of A-World Consulting Limited and has extensive experience in public relations and corporate communications. She has served on other government advisory boards and committees.

     Welcoming the new appointment, the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, said: "Mrs Mak has been taking a leading role in her profession. I am confident that she will contribute to the deliberations of the council by considering food safety and environmental hygiene issues from a broad public interest perspective and provide valuable advice to assist the Government in formulating the relevant policies."

     Dr Chow also expressed his gratitude to the outgoing member, Dr Lo Chi-kin, for his professional advice and significant contribution to the advisory council.

     The advisory council is a non-statutory body established on April 1, 2000, to advise the Government on food and environmental hygiene issues. Its terms of reference are -

* To consider and advise the Secretary for Food and Health on policies relating to food safety, environmental hygiene and veterinary public health, and to monitor their implementation;

* To advise the Secretary for Food and Health on the regulation of farms, food premises, food hazards and food composition;

* To receive reports on the handling of major food and farm incidents; and

* To advise the Secretary for Food and Health on community education and publicity programmes for promoting public understanding of food safety and public responsibility for environmental hygiene.

     The council now comprises a chairman, 15 non-official members and four ex-officio members. The membership list of the council with effect from April 1, 2011, is as follows -
