Contractor fined for violation of safety rules

     Great Contracting (HK) Limited was fined $90,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court today (March 24) for violations of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Electricity) Regulations and the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on July 14 last year on a construction site at Discovery Bay in which a worker was electrocuted while installing electric wires.

     According to Regulation 6 of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Electricity) Regulations, all live conductors must be insulated and protected so as to prevent electrical hazard so far as is reasonably practicable. Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $50,000.

     According to Regulation 47(1) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor shall take necessary measures to prevent workmen from being endangered by live electric cables. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000.
