The locally based Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra will hold a series of concerts titled "Tales from Journey to the West 2011" in April and May.
Featuring musician and storyteller Tang Wing-hong, Hong Kong's only female face-changing performer Wai Fei-hung, and puppet performer Santa Jim, the concerts will invite audiences to join fantastical adventures accompanied by Chinese music.
Under the baton of Wai Sing-fat, the orchestra will perform "Tales from Journey to the West" (Overture "Birth of the Monkey King", "The Monkey King Wreaks Havoc in Heaven", "The Monkey King Thrice Teases Princess Iron Fan", "The Monkey King Thrice Beats the Bony Ghost"), "Gandhanra" and "Prince Qin Breaks Through the Encirclement of the Enemy". During the performance the music will blend with fascinating stories (in Cantonese), face-changing and puppetry.
Established in 1979, the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra aims to promote Chinese music and carry its rich heritage forward for the benefit of future generations. Its members are professionally trained recitalists and winners of the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Some members were selected by the Music Office as "Hong Kong elite" to give touring performances abroad.
On the 30th anniversary of its foundation, the orchestra invited friends from Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Australia and Sichuan, China, to perform in a concert in Hong Kong. The orchestra has also made many recordings on both cassette and CD, including the gold disc winner, "Fishermen's Song of the East Sea".
"Tales from Journey to the West 2011" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The concerts will take place at 8pm, April 16 (Saturday), at the Theatre, Ngai Chi Wan Civic Centre; 3pm, April 17 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Tuen Mun Town Hall, and 3pm, May 22 (Sunday), at the Y-Theatre, Youth Square. Tickets priced at $100 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may receive a 50% discount (limited tickets for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20% is offered for group bookings.
