The Correctional Services Department (CSD) held a Chinese calligraphy competition for inmates today (March 14). A total of 397 inmates took part in the competition on "Dao Te Ching" calligraphy in 18 correctional institutions at the same time.
At the launch ceremony at Pak Sha Wan Correctional Institution (PSWCI), Assistant Commissioner of Correctional Services (Rehabilitation), Mr Lee Sheung encouraged inmates to make good use of their spare time in developing various interests, such as Chinese calligraphy.
Mr Lee said, "The road to rehabilitation is not easy. I hope every inmate is able to face the challenges and pursue self-enhancement to help start a new life after release and make a contribution to society.
"Support from non-government organisations and the community is crucial to various rehabilitation activities held by CSD."
The department first organised the Dao Te Ching calligraphy competition for inmates with Tung Sin Tan in 2009. The support of the Hong Kong Taoist Association and Tung Sin Tan has enabled the competition to be held again this year (2011). Also attending the event at PSWCI today were chairman of the Hong Kong Taoist Association, Mr Tong Wai-ki and chairman of Tung Sin Tan, Mr Yip Wing-shing.
