Japanese earthquake tsunami unlikely to cause significant effect in Hong Kong
**********************************************************

A severe earthquake of magnitude 8.9 occurred near east coast of Honshu, Japan at about 1.47pm (Hong Kong time) today (March 11).

The earthquake has generated a tsunami affecting the Pacific and a chart forecasting the tsunami's travel time across the ocean is attached.

For Hong Kong and the neighbouring coastal areas, the tsunami is unlikely to cause any significant effect. The rise in the local sea level is expected to be less than half a metre, which is much lower than the normal day-to-day tidal variation of about one metre.
