Public reminded to maintain anti-mosquito efforts
*************************************************

Despite the low ovitrap index levels recorded in January, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) today (March 4) reminded the public to keep up effective measures against mosquito breeding as mosquito eggs start to hatch when the weather turns warm and humid.

"The monthly average ovitrap index for January this year dropped to 0%, from 0.1% in December last year. As for port areas, the average ovitrap index rose slightly to 0.1% from zero in December," an FEHD spokesman said.

The ovitrap indices reflect the prevalence of Aedes albopictus, a mosquito vector for dengue fever transmission.

"To step up monitoring of the prevalence of Aedes albopictus, starting from January 2011, the number of localities under surveillance increased from 38 to 44 to cover Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay; Shau Kei Wan and Sai Wan Ho as well as their neighbouring areas; Hung Hom and To Kwa Wan as well as their neighbouring areas; Sai Kung Town and its neighbouring areas; So Kwun Wat; and Sheung Kwai Chung," the spokesman said.

In order to heighten public awareness of the potential risk of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis, the first phase of a four-week Anti-mosquito Campaign for this year was launched on Monday (February 28).

During the three-phase campaign period, relevant government departments and public bodies will strengthen mosquito preventive and control measures as well as publicity efforts throughout the territory.

Aedes albopictus breeds in small water bodies. The spokesman advised the public and estate management bodies to scrub all drains and surface sewers, and limewash them with alkaline detergent compound at least once a week to remove any mosquito eggs. They should also keep the drains free from blockage and fill up all depressions to prevent puddles.

People should inspect their homes and surroundings to remove potential breeding grounds; scrub vases and pot plant saucers at least once a week; properly dispose of containers such as soft drink cans and lunch boxes; and drill large holes in unused tyres.

The ovitrap indices and information on anti-mosquito measures under the Anti-mosquito Weekly Inspection Programme are available on the department's website www.fehd.gov.hk.
