Chinese tradition on display in public space under Canal Road flyover (with photos)
*********************************************************

The public space under Canal Road flyover was opened today (February 25) following the official completion of the Wan Chai District Council (WCDC) beautification project. Through descriptions of the Chinese calendar's 24 Solar Terms on the flyover columns, people may learn more about Chinese tradition while enjoying the improved environment.

The Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, unveiled a plaque for the project today. WCDC Chairman, Mr Suen Kai-cheong; District Officer (Wan Chai), Miss Angela Luk; Chairman of WCDC District Works and Facilities Management Committee, Mr Wong Wang-tai, and Mrs Tan put together symbols of the Solar Terms on the ceremony backdrop to mark the completion of the project.

The project is one of the environmental improvement projects carried out by WCDC's District Works and Facilities Management Committee. Apart from repaving the pavement and installing railings and curved feature walls, the project also wrapped the 12 flyover columns in aluminum cladding on which the 24 Solar Terms and their descriptions are represented in the form of Chinese paper-cuts and illuminated by spotlights. The 24 Solar Terms denote seasonal changes during the Chinese calendar year closely related to agricultural activities in ancient China.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Tan said, "With the 24 Solar Terms of the Chinese calendar as the project theme, we aim to enhance citizens' and tourists' understanding of Chinese tradition. The prime location can provide the public with a meeting place for leisure and appreciation of arts."

She expressed the hope that all sectors would continue to work together to plan and implement more district projects to foster a better community.
