The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited Cia. Kukla (Argentina) to perform "Circus Hokus Pokus", a circus variety show in black light theatre that promises a fantastic visual impact for the audience.
"Circus Hokus Pokus", written and directed by Antoaneta Madjarova, features puppets, clowns and black light theatre. The story starts with five characters trying to escape the rain in an imaginary vehicle. They come to a stop at the door of a circus and as they go inside, they realise there are no clowns to start the show. In a spirit of derring-do, they take over and start the show themselves. The programme offers huge variety and an astonishing cast including two contortionist dancers, a Chinese juggler, three cats on stilts playing rock and roll, a tangram (ancient Chinese game with animated geometric figures representing animals and objects), Russian dancers and acrobats, a lion tamer, monkey jugglers and even an invisible magician. The music plays an essential role in the programme and is eclectic, ranging from ambient, jazz, rock and roll to electronic, African percussion and classical.
Cia. Kukla were formed in Bulgaria by artistic director Antoaneta Madjarova, who studied at Sofia's National Theatre and Cinema University. Madjarova is now a director, actress, puppeteer, playwright and teacher at the Puppet and Objects Theatre at San Martˆqn University, Argentina. Since 1991, Cia. Kukla has used Argentina as its base and created all kinds of plays for children and families. The group has garnered rave reviews from the press during various tours and festivals, including to The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Chile, Mexico, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. They have received many awards, including the Argentina ACE Award for the performances "Thumbelina" and "Circus Hokus Pokus". The play "Circus Hokus Pokus" has also received the Argentina ATINA Award and World Theatre Award in 2010.

"Circus Hokus Pokus" by Cia. Kukla is one of the attractions of Family Fun 2011. Tickets priced from $120 to $180 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (CSSA)(limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
