Cluster of Human Swine Influenza cases in a severe mentally handicapped ward of Siu Lam Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     A spokesperson for Siu Lam Hospital (SLH) made the following announcement today (February 17):

     Six female patients (aged 34 to 56) and four staff members in a ward for the severe mentally handicapped have presented with fever and respiratory symptoms since February 4. Appropriate viral tests have been arranged for the patients. Test results of all six patients were positive for Human Swine Influenza. Four of the patients have been transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment under isolation, two are in serious condition and two are stable. The remaining two patients are being treated under isolation in SLH and are in stable condition. Among the four staff members concerned, three have recovered and resumed duty, while the other is currently on leave and in stable condition.

     Admission to the ward has been suspended and a restricted visiting policy has been imposed.  Infection control measures have been stepped up. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
