Exhibition to focus on maritime industry careers for young people

     School-leavers and job seekers are invited to explore education and career opportunities in Hong Kong's maritime industry by visiting the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council's booth at the Education and Careers Expo 2011 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) between February 17 and February 20.

     "Job opportunities in the maritime industry will remain plentiful for the foreseeable future, as the industry is need of manpower," a spokesman for the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council said.

     An exhibition at the booth provides information and entry requirements for careers in various maritime service sectors including ship management, ship finance, shipbroking, marine insurance, maritime law and maritime arbitration, as well as professional posts in the Marine Department.

     "To enhance Hong Kong's position as an international maritime centre, we need more home-grown talent to join the ranks of our highly regarded maritime professionals," the spokesman said.

     The booth also provides information on various maritime-related education programmes offered by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Vocational Training Council's Maritime Services Training Institute and the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Training (Tsing Yi), as well as training incentive schemes like the Hong Kong Maritime Scholarship Scheme, the Sea-going Training Incentive Scheme, and the Ship Repair Training Incentive Scheme.

     Visitors who wish to find out more should also attend the "Gateway to Maritime Career" seminar, to be held from 2.45pm to 3.15pm on February 17 at the Seminar Room, Hall 1C-E, HKCEC.   

     The speakers include the Manager, Maritime Services Training Institute of the Vocational Training Council, Mr Tony Yeung; Assistant Professor, Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dr Yip Tsz-leung; Senior Lecturer, Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Vocational Training Council, Mr Yeung Wing-cheung; and Convenor of the Maritime Professional Promotion Federation, Captain Marso Law.

     This opportunity to enquire directly about maritime careers and training programmes is open to all on a first come, first served basis.

     The Education and Careers Expo 2011 is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council at Hall 1C-E, HKCEC, Harbour Road, Hong Kong, from February 17 to February 20.  Admission is free.
