Man gets four weeks' imprisonment for assaulting Labour Inspector
********************************************************

The proprietor of a logistics company was sentenced to four weeks' imprisonment in the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (February 10) for a charge of common assault against a Labour Inspector.

The proprietor refused to co-operate and assaulted the Labour Inspector when he conducted an inspection at his logistics company in Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, on September 29 last year. Subsequently, the Police carried out an investigation and prosecuted the proprietor for a count of common assault.

In addition, the proprietor was also ordered to pay $1,500 compensation to the Labour Inspector.

"Labour Inspectors conduct inspections on establishments of various industries to enforce labour laws and the Immigration Ordinance. The Labour Department takes a serious view of employers' compliance with these provisions and will prosecute offenders whenever sufficient evidence is secured.

"We call upon employers to cooperate fully with our Labour Inspectors in discharging their duties," a spokesman for the department said.
