Have you ever thought of being surrounded by dancers while strolling in a park? Or thought of being one of them? Now, you will be given an opportunity to experience the power of dancing at four major parks managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) in the upcoming three weekends.
Starting this weekend (February 12 and 13), "ArtAlive@Park" activities "Big Dance" and "Site-specific Dance Gala: DELT" will take place at Hong Kong Park, Sha Tin Park, Kowloon Park and Tuen Mun Park respectively.
The Fringe Club and City Contemporary Dance Company are also involved in organising the series of dance performances and activities at the four parks, effectively turning them into big performance stages and bringing "dance fever" to the audience.
"Big Dance" will present a new show entitled "Big Dance Little Red Hat", featuring over 50 young dancers performing a wide array of dance forms from "street" to "modern". There will be also a narrator to help explain the performances. The audience will also be invited to join in a group dance to celebrate the power of dancing after each show. "Big Dance" will take place from 3pm to 4pm at Olympic Square in Hong Kong Park on February 12, the Amphitheatre in Sha Tin Park on February 13, Sculpture Walk in Kowloon Park on February 19, and Self-Entertainment Zone in Tuen Mun Park on February 20.
"Site-specific Dance Gala: DELT" will encourage the audience to consider our modern lifestyle through a series of dance performances under the themes "Dressing, Eating, Living and Travelling". "Dressing" depicts Hong Kong's colourful and transformative fashion style using exaggerated cartoon costumes; "Eating" focuses on Chinese and Western cuisine while the audience will see dancers wielding giant knifes and chopsticks to the sound of familiar local music; "Living" portrays the plight of ordinary people in Hong Kong by using garbage bags as furniture to represent the luxury residential dream; "Travelling" reflects Hong Kong's busy streets and high-speed lifestyle as dancers move fluently across the park. "Site-specific Dance Gala: DELT" will take place from 3pm to 3.30pm and 4pm to 4.30pm at Olympic Square in Hong Kong Park on February 19 and 26, the Piazza in Kowloon Park on February 20, and the Self-Entertainment Zone in Tuen Mun Park on February 27.
Presented by the LCSD, the "ArtAlive@Park" project involves students and graduates from four local universities, including the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU); the Department of Fine Arts, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK); the School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Faculty of Architecture, University of Hong Kong (HKU). They were invited to create site-specific artworks under the theme "CityˇDCommunityˇDNature", and to ornament the four parks according to their unique environmental characteristics.
Free public and school tours, and art shuttles taking visitors to view the various artworks in the four parks will be arranged until February 28 when the project closes.
"ArtAlive@Park" is presented by the LCSD and organised by the Art Promotion Office. Supporting organisations include the Education Bureau, Tourism Commission and Hong Kong Tourism Board, while Academy of Visual Arts, HKBU; Department of Fine Arts, CUHK; School of Design, PolyU and Faculty of Architecture, HKU have provided artistic collaboration. The Community Art Network was also invited to act as curatorial collaborator for the project. Programme collaborators include City Contemporary Dance Company and the Fringe Club. Fotanian, Hong Kong Art Walk and JCCAC Artist Village are network partners.
