Carnivals and lantern displays to celebrate Spring Lantern Festival

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold three lantern carnivals in different parts of the territory between February 17 and 19 to celebrate the Spring Lantern Festival.

     A spectacular lantern exhibition "Rejoice! Happy New Year!" is now on show at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza. Admission to the lantern exhibition and all carnivals is free.

     Lantern carnivals will be held at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza on February 17, at Tuen Mun Park on February 18 and at Fanling Recreation Ground on February 19 respectively.  Festive lantern installations at Tuen Mun Park and Fanling Recreation Ground will be on display between February 17 and 20.

     The lantern carnival at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza is decorated with appealing pink light installations and floral shaped wheels of fortune to give the ambience of a blossom garden. Making use of the park's landscape, installations at Tuen Mun Park feature a picturesque scenery of colourful lanterns. Symbolising prosperity, a seven-metre high lantern decorated with a tiger and seven rabbits will stand at Fanling Recreation Ground.

     Details of the three lantern carnivals are as follows:
1. Urban Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival
   Date and time: February 17 (Thursday),
                  7.30pm-10.30pm
   Venue: Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza
   Programmes: Chinese ethnic dances,
               spectacular acrobatics,
               golden oldies,
               Cantonese opera performance,
               Chinese instrumental performance,
               fortune-telling,
               lantern quiz, wish-making corner,
               henna tattoo fun stalls,
               and roving entertainment.

2. New Territories West Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival
   Date and time: February 18 (Friday),
                  7.30pm-10.30pm
   Venue: Tuen Mun Park
   Programmes: Chinese ethnic dances,
               spectacular acrobatics,
               choral performance,
               Chinese instrumental performance,
               golden oldies, fun painting,
               chess playing corner,
               outdoor film show, wish-making corner,
               lantern quiz, and roving entertainment

3. New Territories East Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival
   Date and time: February 19 (Saturday),
                  7.30pm-10.30pm
   Venue: Fanling Recreation Ground
   Programmes: Chinese ethnic dances,
               spectacular acrobatics,
               lion dance, golden oldies,
               guzheng performance,
               Cantonese opera excerpts,
               fortune-telling, lantern quiz,
               wish-making corner,
               and roving entertainment

     Organised by Hong Kong Heritage Museum, an exhibition on "Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage: Lantern-lightening Ritual" will be displayed at the foyer of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre until February 17, to complete the Lantern Carnival.

     The lantern exhibition "Rejoice! Happy New Year!" will also light up the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza until March 6.  This Lunar New Year thematic lantern exhibition features the customs of various Asian countries in celebrating the New Year, including China, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Exhibits include colourful Chinese "lion dance" lanterns accompanied by a big drum; lanterns featuring a tug of war with elephants in Thailand; a Japanese game "Hagoita" (a traditional Japanese game similar to badminton) and Koreans in traditional costumes. There are also floating lotus lanterns on the piazza pools and LED lights inside lanterns on the boats producing candlelight effect.
