Police urge caution in job hunting
**********************************

Police are urging job seekers to be vigilant after they received reports of suspected deception in which informants were persuaded to purchase iPhone and apply for monthly plans when seeking general merchandise operator (GMO) job.

The appeal was made after Police arrested three men for conspiracy to defraud.

Since October 2010, advertisements were found in newspapers for recruiting people to take iPhone back to Mainland. When job seekers responded to the recruitment advertisement, they were persuaded to purchase iPhone through monthly telephone plans from different telephone companies before they could get the job. The phones were then handed over to staff of the company.

After making the purchases, the job seekers were told to wait for the arrangement for GMO work. Nevertheless, none of them have been offered the job so far. Some of the job seekers even received bills of telephone plan asking them to settle the bills.

Feeling deceived, some of the job seekers reported their cases. Police have received at least nine reports relating to this logistic company.

In response to these reports, Police arrested two men, age 48 and 20, at the logistic company located in Sheung Shui yesterday afternoon. Later today (February 8), police arrested a third man, aged 23, in Causeway Bay as he accompanied an informant to buy an iPhone. They are still being detained for further investigation.

Police remind people to beware of such deception activities. Those who have been deceived by similar methods should contact Police on 3661 3662
