Public hospitals announce latest Human Swine Influenza cases

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     In response to the recent influenza situation in Hong Kong, the Hospital Authority (HA), in close collaboration with the Centre for Health Protection, has activated the enhanced monitoring system for severe influenza patients staying at the intensive care unit (ICU) of public hospitals.  The HA spokesman announced the following update today (January 31):

United Christian Hospital ¡V

     A 70-year-old female patient was confirmed Human Swine Influenza (HSI) on January 29. The patient, now in critical condition, is being treated in the ICU under Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and also on ventilation support. The patient developed flu symptom and was admitted for treatment via Accident and Emergency Department on January 28. Her condition deteriorated and was transferred to ICU for close monitoring.

     A 51-year-old female patient was confirmed HSI on January 30 in United Christian Hospital. The patient, now in critical condition, is being treated in the ICU under Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and also on ventilation support. The patient developed fever and flu symptom and was admitted for treatment via Accident and Emergency Department on January 29. Her condition deteriorated and was transferred to ICU for close monitoring on the same day.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital ¡V

     A 32-year-old male patient was confirmed HSI on January 31. The patient, now in critical condition, has been transferred to the ICU of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital under Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and on ventilation support. The patient developed fever and flu symptom and was admitted for treatment via Accident and Emergency Department of the United Christian Hospital on January 30.

     A 60-year-old male patient was confirmed HSI on January 30.  He is being treated in the ICU and now in critical condition. He is under Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and also on ventilation support.  The hospital will continue to closely monitor his condition.  The patient developed fever and cough symptoms on January 27 and was admitted for treatment via Accident and Emergency Department.

Tuen Mun Hospital ¡V

     A 61-year-old male patient was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital due to cough and shortness of breath on January 29, and was confirmed HSI on January 30.  He is being treated in the ICU and in critical condition now.  He is receiving Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and is also on ventilation support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor his condition.

Tseung Kwan O Hospital ¡V

     A 63-year-old male patient in the ICU was confirmed HSI on January 29. The patient, now in serious condition, is under Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and also on oxygen therapy. The hospital will continue to closely monitor his condition. The patient developed fever symptom on January 27. He was admitted to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for further treatment via Accident and Emergency Department on January 28.

Prince of Wales Hospital ¡V

     A 29-year-old female patient attended the Accident and Emergency Department of the Yan Chai Hospital on January 29 due to fever and shortness of breath . HSI was confirmed the same day. She was transferred to the ICU of the Prince of Wales Hospital on January 30 because of deterioration in condition. Her condition is critical and is receiving Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and is also on ventilation support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor her condition.

Yan Chai Hospital ¡V

     A 28-year-old female patient was confirmed HSI on January 28 and is being treated in the ICU.  The patient, now in serious condition, is under Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment. The hospital will continue to closely monitor her condition.  The patient developed shortness of breath, diarrhoea, fever symptoms starting on January 23, and she was admitted for treatment via Accident and Emergency Department on same day.

Pok Oi Hospital ¡V

     A 58-year-old male patient was admitted to Pok Oi Hospital on 28 January, and was confirmed HSI on the same day.  He is being treated in the ICU and in critical condition now.  He is receiving Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and is also on ventilation support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor his condition.

Ruttonjee and Tang Shiu Kin Hospitals ¡V

     A 60-year-old male patient was admitted to Ruttonjee Hospital due to heart failure on January 21. He was transferred to ICU on January 28. The patient was confirmed HSI on January 29 and in critical condition now. He is receiving Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and is also on ventilation support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor his condition.

     As at 2pm today, there were a total of 28 influenza patients staying in the ICU of public hospitals.  Ten of the patients are newly reported in the past three days, all of them were confirmed HSI cases as outlined above.
