In response to the recent influenza situation in Hong Kong, the Hospital Authority (HA), in close collaboration with the Centre for Health Protection, has activated the enhanced monitoring system for severe influenza patients staying at the intensive care unit of public hospitals. The HA spokesman announced the following update today (January 28):
A 59-year-old male patient confirmed Human Swine Influenza (HSI) today is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH). The patient, now in critical condition, is under Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and is also on ventilation support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor his condition. The patient was transferred from hospital in the mainland to TMH for intensive care treatment yesterday (January 27).
In addition, Queen Elizabeth Hospital announced that a 60-year-old male patient confirmed HSI yesterday is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit. The patient, now in critical condition, is under Tamiflu and antibiotic treatment and also on ventilation support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor his condition. The patient developed cough symptom on January 20 and was admitted for treatment via Accident and Emergency Department.
Furthermore, a 61-year-old female patient announced by Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital yesterday as confirmed HSI succumbed at 9.45am today due to continued deterioration of clinical condition. The hospital would like to express its deep condolences to the patient's family.
As at 2pm today, there were a total of 18 influenza patients staying in the intensive care unit of public hospitals. Three of the patients are newly reported today, and two of them were confirmed HSI cases as outlined above.
