The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, said today (January 28) that the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macao health authorities would continue to pursue closer co-operation in safeguarding public health of the three places.

Speaking at the Ninth Joint Meeting of Senior Health Officials of the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macao held in Hong Kong, Dr Chow said that the joint meeting was instrumental in enhancing the efficacy of health protection measures in the three places.

"The Joint Meeting has always been an important platform for the governments of the three places to exchange views on public health issues and share experiences. Over the years, the three places have developed cooperative measures on many fronts.  These range from the notification mechanism for public health emergencies, to the regular food safety inspections and exchanges among healthcare professionals," he said.

The meeting today brought together more than 60 leading medical and public health officials and experts from the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macao.  The Mainland and Macao delegations were respectively led by the Vice-Minister of Health, Professor Huang Jiefu, and the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Mr Cheong U.

During the meeting, delegates reported on the respective local situations and exchanged views on topics including the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and possible collaboration opportunities; development and co-operation in the area of traditional Chinese medicine; healthcare reform and regulation of pharmaceutical products.  Leaders and experts of the three places agreed that their respective healthcare systems could be further enhanced through the sharing of experiences.  The delegates also looked forward to deepening tripartite co-operation and continued strengthening of mechanisms for information exchange and notification.
