Red tides sighted
*****************

Two red tides were sighted in Hong Kong waters yesterday, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (January 28).

The red tide at O Pui Tong Fish Culture Zone observed by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) staff still persists while the other one at Deep Water Bay reported by Ocean Park staff has dissipated today.

No associated death of fish was reported in the two occurrences.

"Both red tides were formed by Mesodinium rubrum, which is common in Hong Kong waters and non-toxic," a spokesman for the working group said.

The AFCD has urged mariculturists at Sha Tau Kok, Ap Chau, Kat O, O Pui Tong, Sai Lau Kong, Sok Kwu Wan, Lo Tik Wan and Po Toi to monitor the situation closely.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
