Update report on Cathay Pacific aircraft accident released
**********************************************************

In accordance with Hong Kong Civil Aviation (Investigation of Accidents) Regulations, an inspector's investigation is in progress to determine the circumstances and causes relating to the accident involving an Airbus A330-342 aircraft (registration mark B-HLL) operated by Cathay Pacific Airways that made an emergency landing at the Hong Kong International Airport on April 13, 2010.

The investigation team today (January 20) released Accident Bulletin 1/2011 as an update to Accident Bulletin 3/2010, issued on August 11, 2010.

A spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) said that the updated bulletin contains information relating to the accident as determined up to the time of issue, and must be regarded as tentative.

"Since the issue of Accident Bulletin 3/2010, the CAD has continue the investigation work on the loss of thrust control encountered by CPA780 on April 13, 2010.  The investigation team has identified fuel contamination to be a cause of the accident.  This update is to share more information with the international aviation communities so that airports, fuel suppliers and air operators can stay vigilant on fuel quality control and fuel contamination.  This update has also made a recommendation to the International Civil Aviation Organisation to establish relevant safety oversight requirements on fuel quality control at airports."

"The investigation team will continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident," the spokesperson added.

The full Accident Bulletin 1/2011 is attached in the annex.  It is also available for download at the CAD webpage (www.cad.gov.hk/english/reports.html).
