CHP investigating case of influenza with severe complication
************************************************************

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (January 18) repeated its call for vigilance against influenza as a report was received of a critical case of confirmed Influenza A affecting a two-year-old girl.

The girl presented with fever, cough and running nose yesterday (January 17) and was taken for medical treatment by a private doctor.  She further developed convulsions today and was admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.  She was suspected to have developed encephalitis. Her current condition is critical.

Her nasopharyngeal aspirate specimens tested positive for Influenza A.

     CHP's investigation continues.

The spokesman reminded members of the public to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures against influenza.

They are advised to maintain good personal as well as environmental hygiene and build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking.

More details on preventive tips regarding influenza are available on CHP's website (www.chp.gov.hk).
