Twenty-four members of Hong Kong Elite Athletes Association (HKEAA) shared their experience and enjoyed some fun with young inmates at Cape Collinson Correctional Institution (CCCI) today (January 15).
Athlete representatives joined young inmates of CCCI in football, volleyball and projectile competitions at the Sports Fun Day organised by the Correctional Services Department. The HKEAA athletes also shared with young inmates their experience in achieving outstanding performances, and encouraged the inmates to develop a positive attitude in facing adversity.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assistant Commissioner of Correctional Services (Rehabilitation), Mr Lee Sheung said, "HKEAA's participation in the event at CCCI means not only having competitions with the inmates and sharing their experiences in competitions, but also means giving love and care to them. It shows that people of the community support them too.
"Every medal gained by an athlete has a touching story behind. It reflects the many successful elements, like perseverance through tough training, a fighting spirit in facing failure as well as strong determination. There's plenty of sweat and tears behind a glittering medal. In order to succeed, one needs to apply devotion and practice step-by-step according to instructions of the coach."
Mr Lee called on inmates of CCCI to learn from the athletes by setting their target and ambitions, then work hard to achieve them.
Members of HKEAA who participated in the Sports Fun Day include the Chairman of HKEAA, Miss Ngai Man-lin; Vice-Chairman Miss Amy Chan; elite athlete in swimming, Miss Sherry Tsai; serving elite athletes in track and field, Mr Lai Chun-ho and Mr Lau Kwok-pan; ex-soccer players Mr Cheung Chi-tak and Mr Leslie Santos, as well other sports commentators.
