Commission on Strategic Development to consider strategy for "Reduce, Recycle and Proper Waste Management"
************************************************************

The Commission on Strategic Development (CSD), chaired by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, will hold a meeting on January 25 (Tuesday) to discuss the strategy proposed by the Environment Bureau on "Reduce, Recycle and Proper Waste Management" to tackle the problem of waste in Hong Kong.

The Secretariat to the Commission issued a paper on the subject for members' reference today (January 14). The paper provides an update on the progress of the key initiatives of "Reduce, Recycle and Proper Waste Management", and sets out the Administration's strategy and the latest action plan to tackle the imminent waste problem in Hong Kong. The paper points out that the three landfills at Tseung Kwan O, Ta Kwu Ling and Tuen Mun will reach full capacity between 2014 and 2018. In order to ensure that solid waste will continue to be handled properly, the Administration will adopt a multi-pronged approach comprising enhancement of waste reduction at source, promotion of recycling, adoption of modern waste treatment facilities and extension of landfills.

A Government spokesman said, "Hong Kong is a well-developed and densely populated city. Proper handling of the waste generated from our everyday life and economic activities is fundamental to the maintenance of public health and a quality environment. The Government has earlier announced a comprehensive waste management strategy and action plan to tackle the imminent waste problem using a multi-pronged approach. We look forward to hearing members' views on this subject through the discussion at CSD."
