The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, today (January 14) visited Yuen Long District to learn more about the nurturing of talent in creative and tourism fields by a secondary school and a vocational training institute in the district.
Mrs Lau first visited Shun Tak Fraternal Association Yung Yau College. The college has won numerous awards in international computer animation and science contests, and has scooped top prizes three years in a row in an IT challenge competition held in Australia. Miss Clara Lee, a form five student, has also had a minor planet named on her behalf for her distinguished performance in scientific research. At a meeting with the student winners, Mrs Lau encouraged them to work to their potential. She also toured the school's animation centre and watched a demonstration by students.
Mrs Lau praised the school for its efforts in grooming talent, saying that this is in line with Government strategy in promoting the development of creative industries and innovative technology.
"The school not only allocates resources in setting up state-of-art teaching facilities, but has also designed an innovative curriculum, including the 3D computer animation course for students at junior levels. These, together with a team of dedicated teachers, provide an excellent learning environment for students to fully demonstrate their unlimited creativity and do Hong Kong proud in the international arena," she said.
Mrs Lau then visited the Vocational Training Council's Hospitality Industry Training and Development Centre, and chatted with students to learn more about their training programme at the institute. She was pleased to note that diversified courses of varying levels are on offer at the institute, and students can receive training in accordance with their interest and capability. Mrs Lau encouraged the students to remain hospitable after completing the courses, helping to make sure that tourists will feel warmly welcomed when visiting Hong Kong.
Mrs Lau also went to Yuen Long Town Hall to learn more about its community services.
Before concluding her visit, Mrs Lau had a meeting with the Yuen Long District Council Vice Chairman, Mr Tang Yun-chor, and District Councillors, to exchange views on issues of mutual interest.
