"5____(5):the interview in sync", the latest work of Lam Yim and Yuen Cheuk-wa, is an aural-visual theatre production powered by human interaction and motion capture/tracking technology.
"5____(5):the interview in sync" concerns the stories of five strong, dark Shakespearean women and the tragic experiences of five fathers.
"Motion Capture/tracking" is a process for recording movement and translating that movement onto a digital model. It records the movements of the actor, not his/her visual appearance. This animation data is mapped to control a model for manipulative performance and allows users to interact with digital content in real-time. "Synchronisation" is the co-ordination of events, such as the conductor of an orchestra leading every musician to keep in time.
The collaborative ensemble also includes Tsang Tak-hong (live music instrumentalist), Moon Yip (set and costume designer), Allen Fung (lighting and video design), Sincere Li (sound designer) and Ashley Cheung (interactivity engineer). They are active artists who have, in different capacities, worked with and been inspired by renowned artists including Mark Fisher, Eugene Pao, Fredric Mao, Ho Ying-fung, Tang Shu-wing, Dadawa, and many more.
Lam Yim studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, and earned an Master of Arts in Advanced Theatre Practice, majoring in performing. During her stay in London, Lam collaborated with artists of different national and cultural backgrounds, participated in creating, performing and producing 10 original theatre pieces, including physical theatre, dance theatre, verbatim theatre, site-specific theatre and puppetry theatre. Of these, "Hooray for Hollywood!!!" and "Transitions" toured at international art festivals in Belgium, Poland and London. Lam's recent local performances and productions include for Radio Television Hong Kong in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department, Social Drama Series "Yi-Nian-Zhi-Jian" episode three; "The Maids x 2" by Alice Theatre Laboratory x Theatre Fanatico; "Heading West 2: The Curious Case of SanZang, Knock, Knock, Anybody Home?", "Ho Bit Kwoon Solo Series 1: Square for Five" (phase 1) and "Exposed/Still Burning" by Theatre Fanatico; and "Antigone" by Theatre du Pif.
Yuen Cheuk-wa is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He was awarded Best Sound Design 2008 by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies for his sound score in Hong Kong Repertory Theatre's "Secret of Resurrection". In 2009, Yuen was commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival to create the multi-media concert - "Primary Shapes: an Eternal Golden Braid". He also served as sound designer and mixing engineer with world-renowned British artistic director/architect Mark Fisher in a theme park acrobatic spectacular called "AQUA" in the same year. Yuen has worked on over a hundred productions, including pop musicals with top-notch sound quality, such as "Last Smile First Tears" by W Theatre x Fiona Sit, "Octave" by W Theatre x Ivana Wong x Hins Cheung; Broadway musicals demanding highly sophisticated sound effects and design, such as "Scrooge" produced by Hong Kong Repertory Theatre; and contemporary experimental theatre requiring extreme creativity, namely "Exposed/Still Burning" and "Heading West 2" by Theatre Fanatico. His works encompass theatre sound design, music production, sound art installation and acoustical research on theatre acoustics and performer's auditory perception.
"5____(5):the interview in sync" (performed in Cantonese), presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be staged at 8pm on February 25 and 26 (Friday and Saturday); and 3pm on February 26 and 27 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Black Box Theatre, Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre. Tickets priced at $170 (free seating) are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients.
