Starting this Saturday and Sunday (January 15 and 16) and for the following three weekends, the four parks where "ArtAlive@Park" is being held －Hong Kong Park, Sha Tin Park, Kowloon Park and Tuen Mun Park - will be filled with fun and games and live music performances. There will be something happening for all the family.
"ArtAlive@Park" is a large-scale public art project, and to coincide with it the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has joined hands with various local art organisations to launch a series of programmes and activities at the four parks, bringing art to the heart of community and giving the public a closer look at artistic works.
The "ArtAlive@Park" project involves students and graduates from local universities, including the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU); the Department of Fine Arts, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK); the School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Faculty of Architecture, University of Hong Kong (HKU). They were invited to create site-specific artworks under the theme "City. Community. Nature", and to ornament the four parks according to their unique environmental characteristics.
In addition to art installations, "ArtAlive@Park" also offers a series of free performances and activities for adults and children to enjoy while visiting the artworks. These performances and activities are organised by Community Art Network, City Contemporary Dance Company and Fringe Club, and include "Stories in the Park", "Games in the Park", "Sound in the Park", Site-specific Dance Gala: "DELT", "Drum for Joy", and "BIG DANCE".
"Games in the Park" involves classic group games, bringing people together on the grass and allowing them to stretch their legs and experience again the simple pleasure of playing games in the park, as well as offering the chance to get to know public spaces that belong to us all. "Games in the Park" will take place from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, at Scented Garden in Tuen Mun Park on January 16, the Back Lawn of the Museum of Tea Ware in Hong Kong Park on January 23, North Garden Lawn in Sha Tin Park on January 30, and the Children's Playground in Kowloon Park on February 6.
Another performance, "Sound in The Park", invites seasoned music critic Yuen Chi Chung to specially produce diverse concerts for the four parks. These concerts take place as small tours across the parks, turning the parks into a public performance and sharing platform. Each concert features different local musicians and bands, and is custom-made for each of the parks so that the park’s unique essence can be captured through a corresponding style of music. "Sound in The Park" will take place from 2.00pm to 4.30pm, at Olympic Square in Hong Kong Park on January 15, the Amphitheatre in Sha Tin Park on February 12; from 2:30pm to 4:30pm, at Chinese Garden in Kowloon Park on January 22, Scented Garden in Tuen Mun Park on January 29, and North Garden Lawn in Sha Tin Park on February 26.
Other activities include "Stories in the Park", which allows visitors to sit back in the soothing open air and listen to fascinating tales; Site-specific Dance Gala: "DELT", which features dances that interact with the park environment; "Drum for Joy", which allows visitors to create a beat of their own by playing drums and all kinds of percussion instruments; and "BIG DANCE", which will spread dance fever across the parks. In addition, there will be free public and school tours, and art shuttles taking visitors to view the various artworks in the four parks.
"ArtAlive@Park" is presented by the LCSD and organised by the Art Promotion Office. Supporting organisations include the Education Bureau, Tourism Commission and Hong Kong Tourism Board, while Academy of Visual Arts, HKBU; Department of Fine Arts, CUHK; School of Design, PolyU and Faculty of Architecture, HKU have provided artistic collaboration. The Community Art Network was also invited to act as curatorial collaborator for the project. Programme collaborators include City Contemporary Dance Company and the Fringe Club. Fotanian, Hong Kong Art Walk and JCCAC Artist Village are network partners.
