Speech by FS at Joint Networking Reception of Toys & Games Fair and Baby Products Fair (English only) (with photos/video)
***********************************************************

Following is the speech by the Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, at the Joint Networking Reception of the Hong Kong Toys and Games Fair, Hong Kong Baby Products Fair, and the launch of the "Toy Town" book at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today (January 10):

Fred (Lam), Jeffrey (Lam), TS (Wong), TC (Cheung), Cliff (Sun), Bernie (Ting), David (Chu), Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentleman,

I would like to pay the very special tribute to many of the pioneers of the toy industry in Hong Kong. Good evening, and a warm welcome to you all.

It has been said "The best things in life come in threes, like friends, dreams and memories".

This evening we celebrate three important events - the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair; the Hong Kong Baby Products Fair and the "Toy Town" book launch.

Under one roof, we have friends being reunited; products that make dreams come true and a book packed with wonderful memories of our city's toy-making history.

And talking of threes, I would like to thank the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Toys Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and the Hong Kong Toys Council for staging this get together.

Over the last six decades, the toy industry has played a key role in driving the city's economic rise and success. The "Made in Hong Kong" stamp has been associated with quality and innovation. I take great pleasure to join all of you today to celebrate the 60 years of achievement of this "Toy Town".

I also congratulate the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair. Even at its 37th edition, the Fair shows no signs of slowing down. Together with the Hong Kong Baby Products Fair, over 2,200 exhibitors from around the globe are here this year.

Despite the impact of the global financial crisis, our total exports of toys, dolls and games amounted to some HK$72 billion in the first 11 months of last year.

In recent years, our toy industry has been geared towards developing more practical, educational, safe and environmentally-friendly products. This has helped the industry stay ahead of the competition and extend its reach into all walks of life.

The market has an increasingly high expectation of the quality and safety of toys and baby products.

A seminar on the safety requirements of baby products will be held at this trade fair tomorrow. Also, this year's Hong Kong Toys Industry Conference will be focusing on the latest EU toy safety directives.

With the trade's hard work and commitment to quality and safety, I am confident that our own unique toy story will continue to pass from generation to generation.

Last but not least, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year, and our visitors a fruitful and enjoyable stay in Hong Kong.

     Thank you very much.
