The Outreach Music Interest Courses Programme, organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), is now open for applications. Over 100 courses, varying from Chinese and western musical instrument classes to diverse musical workshops, offer interesting content for applicants of all ages, from adults to children.
The courses, conducted in Cantonese, will be held from March to July.
New workshop titles for this term include "Music Appreciation Series, Conducting Maestros of Our Time", which introduces different interpretations and styles of famous conductors, the role of the conductor and the basic principles of conducting. Another is "A Taste of Jazz", which covers different genres of jazz, jazz maestros and a selection of international and local jazz festivals.
Three workshop series on ensemble playing will be held for people aged 15 or above, covering Chinese Ensemble, String Ensemble and Saxophone Ensemble. Chinese Ensemble is suitable for those who have completed Foundation II or equivalent standards of one of the following instruments: dizi, erhu, liuyeqin, pipa, zhong-ruan, yangqin, zheng or cello.
Those who have completed Foundation II or equivalent on the violin, viola or cello can apply for the String Ensemble course, while Saxophone Ensemble will be open to those having completed the Foundation II, or have attained similar standards on the saxophone.
Other regular workshop series cover guitar, hulusi, ukulele and keyboard playing, sight-singing and aural skills, vocal singing and western music theory. All are available for different age groups. The course fee for the workshop series ranges from $320 to $500.
To provide short-term basic music training for all ages, the Outreach Music Interest Courses also provide Chinese and western elementary music classes for dizi, xiao, erhu, pipa, liuyeqin, zhong-ruan, yangqin, zheng, flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, violin, viola, cello and percussion. The course fee is $800.
The courses will be held at different venues throughout Hong Kong. They are the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hong Kong City Hall, Sha Tin Town Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Tuen Mun Town Hall, North District Town Hall, Sheung Wan Civic Centre, Sai Wan Ho Civil Centre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre, Tai Po Civic Centre, Kwai Tsing Theatre, Yuen Long Theatre, Ko Shan Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library, Pei Ho Street Sports Centre (Sham Shui Po), Yeung Uk Road Sports Centre (Tsuen Wan) and the Music Office's five music centres - Wan Chai, Mong Kok, Kwun Tong, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan.
Course prospectuses and application forms are now available at all performing venues of the LCSD and all music centres of the Music Office. Online applications are also available at the Music Office's website www.lcsd.gov.hk/musicoffice. The deadline for applications is January 18. Oversubscribed courses will be processed by ballot. For courses not fully taken up, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from February 15.
