The fifth Anti-drug Soccer Competition, organised by the Narcotics Division Anti-drug Volunteer Group (VG), was held today (January 2) at Happy Valley Recreation Ground.

The competition aimed to encourage youth participation in sports to help them build self-confidence, lead a healthy and positive life and stay away from drugs.

There were eight teams joining the competition.  They were Caritas Lok Heep Club, Christian New Being Fellowship, Christian Zheng Sheng College, International Police Association Hong Kong Section, Operation Dawn, Society for the Aid and Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers, Tai Po Gen Y Anti-drug Football Team and a team formed by ambulancemen. International Police Association Hong Kong Section won the championship.

Speaking at the competition's closing cum prize presentation ceremony, the Chairman of the Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) Sub-committee on Preventive Education and Publicity, Ms Scarlett Pong, said preventive education was important in tackling the youth drug abuse problem.  The ACAN and the Administration would continue to adopt a multi-modality approach in implementing anti-drug measures in light of the latest drug trends and social environment, raising the community's awareness of the harmful effects of drugs.

"In addition to the central anti-drug publicity initiatives launched by the Administration, efforts have been made by different sectors of the community to organise anti-drug activities popular among young people at the district level to deliver 'healthy life' and 'NO drugs' messages," Ms Pong said.

The Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Mr Lam Woon-kwong; the Chairman of the Co-organising Committee of VG, Mr Ray Leung; and an awardee of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection 2010, Ms Kay Tse, also attended the ceremony as the officiating guests and cheered for the participants.

Vice-Chairman of the Co-organising Committee of VG, Mr Ben Kuen, hosted a sharing session with the officiating guests and two rehabilitating youths on how to help misguided young people and lead them onto the right track.

A performance match by members of the VG and the Law Society of Hong Kong was held with The Law Society of Hong Kong winning the match.
