Import of poultry products from Japan resumes
*********************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (December 28) announced that the processing of applications for importing poultry meat and products (including eggs) from Japan (except from Shimane Prefecture) would resume with immediate effect.

CFS suspended the processing of applications on December 3 following confirmation of an outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 in Yasugi city, Shimane Prefecture, Japan.

"In view of the control measures taken by Japan and the fact that there are no other reported cases of avian influenza, we have decided to resume processing applications," a CFS spokesman said.

"Restrictions are not yet lifted for Shimane Prefecture, and we are monitoring the situation there," he said.
