SEN attends UN climate change meeting in Cancun (with photo)

     The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, today (December 8, Cancun time) attended the 16th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16) in Cancun, Mexico.

     As a member of the Chinese Delegation, Mr Yau attended the COP16's High-level Segment meeting. He listened to national statements delivered by various nations, including a speech by the Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, Mr Xie Zhenhua, on how the Chinese Government had identified the proactive tackling of climate change as a key strategy for economic and social development.

     Mr Xie said China firmly supported the Cancun Conference in reaching a broad and balanced outcome based on the consensus reached three years ago, and was willing to play a positive and constructive role in promoting progress of the negotiation.
               
     Mr Yau will continue to attend COP16 meetings tomorrow (December 9, Cancun time).
