SEN to attend Cancun Climate Change Conference

     The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, leaves for Cancun, Mexico, today (December 6) to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference which encompasses the 16th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (also known as COP16) and related meetings. Mr Yau will attend the Conference as a member of the Chinese delegation.

     As part of the international community, Hong Kong has actively sought solutions and taken action to address climate change.  In Cancun, Mr Yau will get a first-hand update on progress towards an international framework for global climate action. He will also have the opportunity to speak to delegates about Hong Kong's aim of becoming a low energy- consumption and low-pollution economy.  

     On December 7, Mr Yau will attend a series of events scheduled under the Climate Leaders Summit 2010 conference.  In the morning, he will join a roundtable breakfast meeting to discuss the latest developments concerning electric vehicles. This session will bring together government officials, auto manufacturers, and representatives in related fields to consider initiatives promoting the wider use of electric vehicles.  

     He will then address participants at the Clean Revolution Ceremony on Hong Kong's efforts to meet the challenges of climate change.  He will outline the city's climate change strategy and action agenda for the coming decade. He will also have exchanges with other government and business leaders on their experiences and initiatives in helping to deliver a cleaner, more efficient and more prosperous future for all.  

     Next on his schedule is the Clean Revolution Lunch, during which he will discuss with participants the means for funding low-carbon development initiatives in cities.  In the evening, he will attend the opening ceremony for COP16's High-level Segment.

     On December 8 and 9, Mr Yau will attend the COP16's High-level Segment and various discussion groups.  He will also take part in COP16's closing session on December 10.

     Mr Yau will leave Cancun for Hong Kong on December 11.
