Public consultation on Hong Kong's climate change strategy and action agenda extended
***********************************************************

The Government today (December 3) announced that the public consultation period on Hong Kong's climate change strategy and action agenda would be extended until December 31, 2010.

An Environment Bureau spokesman said that the consultation period had been extended so that various stakeholder groups would have more time to consider the proposals and submit their views.

The spokesman said, "The proposed climate change strategy and agenda sets outlines various means of combating climate change, including enhancing energy efficiency, promoting green transport, turning waste into energy, and revamping the fuel mix.  In addition to these mitigation measures, it also highlights Hong Kong's vulnerable areas in light of the growing impact of climate change."

"We look forward to receiving the views of the public, which will be incorporated as we finalise Hong Kong's climate strategy for the coming decade," said the spokesman.

The Government launched a public consultation on Hong Kong's climate change strategy and action agenda on September 10, 2010.

The consultation document is available for collection at District Offices, Environmental Protection Department (EPD) Regional Offices and public libraries.  It can also be downloaded from the EPD website: www.epd.gov.hk.

Comments on the consultation document may be sent to the EPD by post (address: 33/F, Revenue Tower, 5 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong), by fax (2838 2155) or via email (cc_consultation@epd.gov.hk).

The consultation document presents the proposals drawn up from the consultancy study on climate change in Hong Kong.  The consultancy report has just been finalised by the study consultant and is released today via EPD's website.

The Environmental Protection Department commissioned a consultancy study in 2008 to review and update the local inventories of greenhouse gas emissions and removals; assess the impact of climate change on Hong Kong; and recommend long-term strategies and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as how to adapt to the unavoidable effects of climate change.  The consultants made a series of topical studies and took into account the views of major stakeholders expressed at technical workshops.
