Exhibition on climate change to promote low carbon lifestyle (with photos)
************************************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) is organising a series of exhibitions to show the impact of climate change on Hong Kong, and how people can help to tackle it by leading a low carbon lifestyle.

The Under Secretary for the Environment, Dr Kitty Poon, visited the exhibition booths at Ma On Shan Plaza. During the tour, she enjoyed some interactive games with visitors and talked about how the community could join hands for a low carbon future.

"Climate change poses an unprecedented global challenge for everyone. To help combat the problem in Hong Kong, the Government has launched a public consultation exercise to propose a comprehensive action agenda to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and gather public views on the solutions," said Dr Poon.

"As electricity generation and transport account for about 85% of Hong Kong's greenhouse gas emissions, we should maximise energy efficiency, revamp the fuel mix for electricity generation and green our road transport."

She noted that one of the Government's major proposals involves  regulatory measures to improve energy efficiency in buildings, for example by expanding the scope and tightening the requirements of the Building Energy Codes. Additionally, the Government aims to enhance the energy efficiency of buildings through new technologies and responsible energy use.

Another area of great importance is the promotion of environmentally friendly vehicles. In this respect the Government is proposing a variety of measures, including the promotion of electric vehicles.

Dr Poon called on members of the public to contribute their ideas to the public consultation document, entitled Hong Kong's Climate Change Strategy and Action Agenda, by December 10.

Views and comments can be sent by mail to the Climate Change Policy Co-ordination Section, Cross-boundary & International Division, Environmental Protection Department, 33/F, Revenue Tower, 5 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, or e-mail (cc_consultation@epd.gov.hk), facsimile (28382155) or via internet  (www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/climate_change/consult.html.
