Government takes RFID to the people (with photos)
*************************************************

The Government is actively helping to take radio frequency identification (RFID) technology from the laboratory into society to benefit the public, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Miss Janet Wong, said today (November 5).

Officiating at the Hong Kong RFID Awards Presentation Ceremony organised by GS1 Hong Kong, Miss Wong said, "For instance, we are exploring the feasibility of deploying RFID technology in public service areas, such as the medical and welfare sectors."

Interesting examples of applications being considered include the tracking of Alzheimer patients and the production of RFID wrist-bands to prevent baby abduction.

"ITC is working hard to expand the scope of the Innovation and Technology Fund so that the production of prototype samples and the conducting of pilot tests can be funded. The experience of the pilot tests and references from the organisations involved will assist in commercialising these RFID products. These factors clearly demonstrate our commitment to the industry," said Miss Wong.

"But our efforts alone cannot ensure success.  We count on the continued support of our partners in the academic, commercial and industrial sectors," Miss Wong added.
