Consultation forums to gather public views on Review of Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance

     The Government has published the "Report on Public Consultation on Review of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance" (consultation report), which consolidates the views received during the public consultation on the review of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO) conducted last year. The consultation report sets out the proposed way forward, including legislative proposals. The proposals cover a number of areas, including direct marketing, data security, powers and functions of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) and offences and sanctions.

     The Government is arranging further public discussion on the details of the legislative proposals, including amendments to the legislation. The consultation period will end on December 31, 2010.

     To consult the public, the Government will hold two public forums. Details are as follows:

First Public Forum

Time: 7pm-9pm
Venue: Youth Square, 238 Chai Wan Road, Chai Wan, Hong Kong

Second Public Forum

Date: November 29 (Monday)
Time: 7pm-9pm
Venue: Cultural Activities Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, 72 Tai Ho Road, Tsuen Wan, New Territories, Hong Kong

     Both forums will be conducted in Cantonese. Simultaneous interpretation in English will be available.

     The public may register by phone (2810 2464), fax (2523 0565) or email (pdpo_consultation@cmab.gov.hk) at the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau from today until two days before each forum. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.   

     The Government, with the support of the PCPD, conducted a comprehensive review of the PDPO and consulted the public on proposals arising from the review last year. The Government issued the consultation report on October 18, 2010 which contains legislative proposals to enhance the protection of personal data privacy. The consultation report is available at all Public Enquiry Service Centres of District Offices and at the website of the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau (www.cmab.gov.hk).
