Pianist Ma Cong to play Chopin with friends

     Locally renowned pianist Ma Cong will collaborate with cellist Anna Kwan and baritone Apollo Wong in an all-Chopin concert in November.

     Ma and his friends will play "Fantasy in F minor, Op. 49", "Seven Polish Songs", "Barcarolle in F-sharp, Op. 60", "Andante and Polonaise in C for Cello and Piano, Op. 3" and "Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35" in the concert, which will be held at 8pm, November 23 (Tuesday), at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall.

     After graduating from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Ma Cong furthered his studies at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto. He was awarded a Hong Kong Jockey Club scholarship and the Bernard Van Zuiden scholarship. He has won numerous prizes including the Singapore Rolex Performance Award and Mozart Bicentenary Piano Competition of Asia. Ma has given recitals in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, the Mainland, Macao and Hong Kong. He has also performed as a soloist with many international and local orchestras.

     Ma was invited to perform at the concert of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. He also appeared as guest performer in the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival 2008 and the First Asian Grand Piano Concert held in Seoul in 2006 and Kuala Lumpur in 2009. He is an adjudicator for local and international piano competitions and gives master classes. Aside from teaching and serving as programme consultant at several universities in Hong Kong, he is also a guest professor at the School of Literature at Beijing Normal University's Zhuhai campus.

     Concert by Ma Cong and Friends is one of the programmes of Our Music Talents series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $100 and $150 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off. (Limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis.) A maximum discount of 15% is offered for the Our Music Talents series package.
