The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:
With effect from October 1, 2010, Legislative Council (LegCo) Members' monthly remuneration will be adjusted from $69,430 to $70,400; the annual medical allowance adjusted from $26,600 to $26,970; and the operating expenses reimbursements from not exceeding $1,799,250 per annum to not exceeding $1,824,440 per annum.
The operating expenses reimbursements are provided to each member to cover expenses arising out of his/her LegCo duties, including hiring of staff, office rental and maintenance costs, printing and communication services, information technology support, travelling and entertainment, etc. Members' reimbursement claims are subject to annual compliance audit checks.
The LegCo Members' remuneration and ceilings for reimbursement of medical allowance and certain operating expenses are subject to annual adjustment by the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury in accordance with the movement of Consumer Price Index (C).
Since October 1994, the remuneration and reimbursement of Operating Expenses of Members have been adjusted annually in October according to the movement of Consumer Price Index (C) in the preceding year, whereas Members' medical allowance has also been subjected to similar annual adjustment since October 2008.
Under the delegated authority of the LegCo Finance Committee, the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury advises the LegCo Secretariat of Members' new remuneration and reimbursement rates for the coming year around September/October each year.
