******************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Commission on Youth:

The Commission on Youth (COY) organised an exchange session with youths today (October 21) attended by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, who exchanged views with participants on "Hong Kong's Climate Change Strategy and Action Agenda".

Mr Yau said, "Climate change brings about extreme weather and poses an unprecedented challenge for us. As part of the international community, Hong Kong should contribute to the solution. We would like to seek comments from the people of Hong Kong on our city's climate change strategy and action agenda for the coming decade.

"We have proposed a carbon intensity reduction target of 50-60% for Hong Kong by 2020 from the 2005 level. To achieve it will require concerted efforts from every member of our community.

"We would like to bring to Hong Kong a green and low-carbon future. Deep in our aspirations is a firm belief that our society will grow and prosper in a sustainable manner for the benefit of this and many more generations to come," he added.

The Chairman of the COY, Mr Chan Chun-bun, said that the Commission would continue to organise exchange sessions and invite government representatives to attend so that young people will have more direct communication with them on topics of concern.
