Public reminded to take anti-mosquito measures during autumn
************************************************************

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) reminded the public to take anti-mosquito measures and stay alert to the risk of mosquito-transmitted diseases in light of the uncertain weather during the autumn season.

An FEHD spokesman said today (October 20) that the monthly average ovitrap index for September had dropped slightly to 8% from 10.2% in August. The ovitrap indices reflect the prevalence of Aedes albopictus, a mosquito vector for dengue fever transmission.

Among the 38 areas surveyed last month, positive ovitrap indices were recorded in all areas except Ma Wan, ranging from 1.7% to 16.7%, with the highest in Tin Shui Wai.

As for port areas, the average ovitrap index stayed at 0.8% as in August.

"Despite a slight drop in the average ovitrap index, the departments concerned have stepped up inspection and measures to enhance environmental hygiene conditions in areas under their ambits in response to the confirmed local cases of dengue fever in September. The aim is to eliminate existing and potential mosquito-breeding grounds in addition to the regular weekly programme.  The FEHD will strengthen control measures whenever necessary," the spokesman said.

At present, the FEHD is taking enhanced mosquito control measures in hands with the parties concerned in districts which recorded ovitrap indices reaching the alert zone of 20%.

Aedes albopictus breeds in small water bodies. The spokesman advised the public and estate management bodies to scrub all drains and surface sewers and limewash them with alkaline detergent compound at least once a week to remove any mosquito eggs. They should also keep the drains free from blockage and fill up all depressions to prevent puddles.

People should inspect their homes and surroundings to remove potential breeding grounds; scrub vases and pot plant saucers at least once a week; properly dispose of containers such as soft drink cans and lunch boxes; and drill large holes in unused tyres.

"After rain, they should remove water from balconies, rooftops and courtyards immediately," he added.

The ovitrap indices and information on anti-mosquito measures under the Anti-mosquito Weekly Inspection Programme are available on the department's website ( www.fehd.gov.hk ).
