Bonni Chan and Sean Curran, co-artistic directors of Theatre du Pif, will collaborate with an ensemble of Hong Kong performers to re-interpret Cao Yu's classic play "Sunrise" in November.
"Sunrise" has long been regarded as one of the most celebrated classics of Chinese theatre. The production is part of the Cao Yu centenary celebrations and is a fusion of text, highly visual theatre and fantastic stage design. Lee Yun Soo, the famous Korean stage designer, joined the creative team to forge a modern "Sunrise" that should not be missed.
Chen Bailu is a high-class prostitute who leads a self-indulgent, pleasure-seeking life in a luxury hotel patronised by rich bankers, socialites and an assortment of prostitutes, gigolos and gangsters. When her old boyfriend Fang Da-shang arrives in the city from the countryside hoping to rescue her from the decadent life she is living, it sets in motion a series of events that leads Bailu on a tragic path from which there is no escape.
"Sunrise" will be performed at 8pm on November 26 and 27 (Friday and Saturday), 3pm on November 27 (Saturday) and 5pm on November 28 (Sunday) at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
One of the programmes in the Cao Yu Drama Festival presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Sunrise" will be performed in Cantonese (with some Putonghua and English) with Chinese and English surtitles. Tickets priced at $120 and $180 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off. (Limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis.) Special discounts are offered for group booking and students purchasing on-the-day tickets.
