SHA commends citizens for serving community (with photo)

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, today (October 12) presented commendation certificates and medals to 97 distinguished people for their contributions to community building and social services.

     At the Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme presentation ceremony, Mr Tsang said he hoped that more people, especially the younger generation, could be inspired by the awardees and would proactively participate in charity activities with love and care.

     Mr Tsang said, "Hong Kong has overcome many challenges over the past year. In addition to continuous economic growth, rolling forward of constitutional development and steady progress in community development, Hong Kong has managed to rise to challenges thanks to the concerted efforts of various sectors in the community.

     "The distinguished people here today have been making contributions in various areas to help promote community building and social services. Over the years, they have been participating actively in community affairs and their contributions in community building, social services and youth development have not only benefited members of the public but also enhanced social harmony and stability."

     He congratulated the award recipients and encouraged them to continue to strengthen their networks with a view to building a united and better future for Hong Kong.

     The Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme, introduced in 2002, aims to recognise individuals with outstanding contributions to community building, community service as well as the development of sports, culture and the arts. Altogether, 1,153 distinguished people have been awarded certificates of commendation over the past eight years.
