Police are investigating a suspected smuggling case in which two police officers fired eight shots at suspicious speedboats in Sha Tau Kok last night (October 7).
Officers of Marine North Division spotted some suspicious speedboats in Tai Sham Chung in Sha Tau Kok during an anti-smuggling operation at about 9pm yesterday. After police vessels blocked off the area, one of the speedboats made several attempts to break through the police cordon by accelerating towards a police craft, thus endangering the safety of the police officers. Police officers at scene fired illuminating flares and gave warning to the people onboard the speedboat but were ignored. Two police officers fired eight shots at the speedboat to prevent the speedboat from ramming into the police craft. The people onboard the speedboats then went onshore and fled. No casualty and damage to property was caused.
Police located nine speedboats at the shore at Tai Sham Chung and seized over 300 boxes of suspected smuggled goods including computer hard disks and electronic parts with an estimated value over $6 million. A 29-year-old man and a 34-year-old man arrested at Kai Kuk Shue Ha were suspected in connection with the case during police sweeping in the vicinity later. They are still being detained for further enquiries.
Active investigations by Regional Crime Unit of Marine are under way. The suspected smuggled goods and speedboats will be handed over to the Customs and Excise Department.
