Police yesterday (October 7) concluded a two-week territory-wide pedestrian road safety campaign aimed at educating pedestrians, in particular senior citizens, on road safety.
A total of 550 verbal warnings and 1,079 summonses were issued to pedestrians during the campaign conducted from September 24 to yesterday.
During the above period, Police issued 767 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 123 summonses for crossing within 15 metres of a footbridge or pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge or pedestrian subway, and 83 summonses for climbing over or through kerbside fence or central reservation onto a carriageway.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams have distributed around 35,000 publicity leaflets at 736 locations across the territory, and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.
"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safety. Those who fail to comply with the related law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000 " a Police spokesman said.
