Over 5,700 events had been staged at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium (QES) since its inauguration in 1980, attracting more than nine million audiences. To celebrate its 30th birthday, a "Queen Elizabeth Stadium 30th Anniversary Fun Day" will be held on Saturday (October 9) from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.
Organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the fun day will feature a series of entertaining variety shows, handcrafts workshops, game stalls, photo exhibition and table tennis games for families to enjoy the weekend. Admission is free.
The QES is the first multi-purpose venue in Hong Kong with facilities of international standard. Its full range of facilities include an arena suitable for various activities such as sports competitions, concerts, variety shows, cultural and entertainment performances, committee rooms, function rooms, a multi-purpose hall, the squash courts and a table-tennis playing area.
It had undergone major renovation and improvement works in 2008 for the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games.
Over the years, some of the major events held at the QES included the table-tennis matches and badminton matches in the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games, the China Gymnastics Performance, the Dreamscape - The Secret Garden of Guizhou, the National Education Activity and the Gymnastic Demonstration, to name a few.
Variety shows will be staged from 3pm at the QES' arena for the fun day. The Rope Skipping World Championships and the World Youth Tournament winners, the Hong Kong Rope Skipping Association, China, will bring audiences many highly-skilled and breathtaking feats of rope skipping. The dancers from the Hong Kong DanceSport Association will present dances combining art and sport with physical strength and aesthetic creativity.
The Old Master Q, the made-in-HK comic icon, will perform in the hilarious magic performance "Old Master Q Mastering His Tricks". Marching with precision in dynamically choreographed formations, members of the Hong Kong Marching Band Association will trumpet a jubilant tune to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the QES. The closing climax will be the "Dance for a Bright Future - Musical Theatre Dance and Jazz Dance" performed by up-and-coming stars.
Handcrafts workshops on badge creation, fan painting, paper clay making and mini Chinese mask as well as game stalls will be held at the lobby and the multi-purpose hall. Not to be missed are the photo exhibition to review the development and precious moments of the QES in the past 30 years and the table tennis game for sports lovers to showcase their talents.
Admission for the performances and activities of the fun day is free. The seats at the arena are on a first-come, first-served basis. Enquiries can be made on 2591 1346 or visit the QES' website www.lcsd.gov.hk/qes.
