********************************************************

The Education Bureau welcomes today (September 30) the announcement of entrance requirements of undergraduate programmes for students of the New Senior Secondary (NSS) curriculum by four self-financing degree-awarding institutions and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA).

The four self-financing degree-awarding institutions are The Open University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Chu Hai College of Higher Education and Hang Seng Management College.

A spokesman for the Education Bureau also announced the promulgation of revised Common Descriptors for sub-degree programmes by the Tripartite Liaison Committee comprising Education Bureau, Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications and Joint Quality Review Committee.

The spokesman said, "These entrance requirements and revised Common Descriptors demonstrate the institutions' support to a broad and balanced NSS curriculum."

"They also recognise the importance of whole-person development and lifelong learning underpinning the NSS curriculum, while ensuring that entrants possess the knowledge, skills and personal qualities needed for them to benefit from their learning," he said.

Entrance requirements of self-financing and HKAPA undergraduate programmes

Details of the entrance requirements are:

*     NSS students applying for a four-year undergraduate programme in these institutions have to attain Level 3 for Chinese Language and English Language and Level 2 for Mathematics and Liberal Studies ("3322") in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE). These general entrance requirements are the same as those announced by University Grants Committee-funded institutions earlier.

*     In addition to the general entrance requirements, most institutions also require one elective subject at Level 2.

Revised Common Descriptors for AD and HD programmes

Under the revised Common Descriptors, applicants are eligible to apply for admission to Associate Degree (AD) or Higher Diploma (HD) programmes if they meet the minimum entrance requirements of Level 2 in five HKDSE subjects including Chinese Language and English Language.  Each applicant is allowed to use up to two Applied Learning subjects in the application.

In addition to entrance requirements, the revised Common Descriptors also set out the programme objectives, learning outcomes, curriculum content, quality assurance and exit qualifications of AD and HD programmes.

"The revised Common Descriptors are drawn up after extensive consultation with the sub-degree providers and other relevant stakeholders," the spokesman said.

"They will enhance quality, consistency and transparency of these programmes," he added.

Details of the entrance requirements and the revised Common Descriptors have been uploaded to the NAS Web Bulletin (www.edb.gov.hk/nas/en). The latter can also be found in EDB website (www.ipass.gov.hk). Students may also visit the websites of respective institutions for details.
