Local dancer Popo Tso to perform "Lotus in Motion"
**************************************************

Veteran local choreographer and dancer Popo Tso will stage her new production, "Lotus in Motion", in October.

"Lotus" is her name. Dance is her beloved bridge to the world. When life is but a repetition of shifting changes, stay pure of heart, and watch the pulsing life of a dancer, in body and spirit. The show is presented in the form of a modern dance, but blends studied ideas of Chinese dance and the subsequent re-creation. In four dance sequences, it explores the budding, the taking root, the soaring, and the new awakening of a dancer in Hong Kong. "Watching" involves a creative mindset of introspection and self-awareness. Watching "Lotus in Motion", then, is the dancer's necessary experiential state to retrace her own experiences in life.

"Lotus in Motion" is choreographed and performed by Tso with music by contemporary musician Kung Chi-shing. Also performing in the show will be Lam Yan-tin, former dancer of the Hong Kong Dance Company, veteran actor Ng Wai-shek and young Cantonese opera actress Wong Hai-wing.

Popo Tso graduated from the School of Chinese Dance at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. In 1988, she was awarded a scholarship and joined the American Dance and Jacob's Pillow Dance festivals in the US. She also gained valuable experience from a residency in New York.

She joined the Hong Kong Dance Company in 1989 and undertook major roles in "Zhou Xuan", "The Magic Lotus Lantern", "Hua-Pi - Ghost Under a Beauty's Skin", "The Story of Chunhyang", "Rough", "Yue Fei", "The Temptation of a Monk" and "Ju Dou". In 1995, she received a scholarship from The Hong Kong Jockey Club to study in the Alvin Ailey American Dance Centre in New York. Upon her return to Hong Kong she was awarded "Artist of the Year 1997 - Dance" by the Hong Kong Artists' Guild.

Tso is currently a choreographer, teacher and freelance artist. She has recently collaborated with DanceArt, The Theatre Fancatico, Miranda Chin Dance Company and the Hong Kong Dance Company. Her creative works include "Snake Chamber", "The Sensation of Woman" and "Nine-Red".
