Nomination and registration invited for Labour Advisory Board Election of Employee Representatives
********************************************************

The Labour Department is inviting employee unions registered under the Trade Unions Ordinance (TUO) to nominate candidates and register as electors for the coming Labour Advisory Board (LAB) Election of Employee Representatives.

"Nomination and registration start today (September 29) and will close on October 21, 2010," a spokesman for the department said.

The current term of the LAB will expire on December 31 this year.  An election of five employee representatives to the LAB for its next two-year tenure will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on November 27 this year.

Employee unions registered under the TUO are eligible to nominate not more than five candidates to run for the election.  Each union can also be registered as an elector and appoint authorised representative(s) to vote on the election day.  Unions registered as electors in the elections in 2006 or 2008 need no re-registration and are eligible to appoint authorised representative(s) direct to vote on the election day.

"We sent out forms for nomination of candidates, registration as electors and appointment of authorised representatives as well as copies of the rules and procedures for the election to these employee unions today," the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the department has invited five employer associations to nominate one representative each to sit for the next tenure of the LAB.  They are the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, the Employers' Federation of Hong Kong, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong.

Enquiries on all matters relating to the election can be made on 2852 4024.

The LAB is a tripartite consultative body which advises the Commissioner for Labour on labour matters.  It comprises 12 members, six representing employees and six representing employers.  Of them, five employee representatives are returned through election by employee unions while five employer representatives are nominated by employer associations.  The remaining employee representative and employer representative are directly appointed by the Government.  The Commissioner for Labour is the ex-officio chairman.
