Paper-cutting delicately reveals marine wonders of Hong Kong (with photos)
************************************************************

The marine wonders of Hong Kong will be revealed through the art of paper cutting at the Visitor Centre of the Hong Kong Wetland Park from today (September 29) to October 11.  Members of the public are welcome to visit.

Jointly organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and the Chinese Arts Paper-cutting Association, the "Hong Kong Marine Wonders Paper-cutting Exhibition" showcases Hong Kong's rich marine life and habitats and offers visitors an opportunity to learn more about marine ecology with inspiration from the traditional Chinese folk art.

The magnificent artworks were created by the famous Chinese paper-cut artist Lu Xue. Featuring marine life such as Chinese white dolphin, green turtle and coral communities, these paper-cutting exhibits not only demonstrate the superb handiwork of a traditional craft, but also provide a glimpse of our colouful marine life.

Despite its small area, Hong Kong is blessed with a rich variety of natural habitats. Along the coastline, there are boulder shore, sandy shore, mangrove, mudflat and rocky shore. The marine flora and fauna is exceedingly diverse including algae, sea grass, jellyfish, coral, nudibranch, octopus, horseshoe crab, sea urchin, starfish and a wide diversity of fish.  Our marine life is experiencing challenges in their living environment as a result of urban developments.  By combining marine conservation message with the art of paper-cutting, the exhibition aims to drive home the message of the importance in protecting our precious marine environment.

In addition, individuals wishing to show their creative talent are invited to join the "2010 Hong Kong Marine Wonders - Paper-cutting Competition" and submit entries before December 17.

The competition is divided into three categories - junior (aged below 12), teenage (aged between 13 and 17) and adult (aged 18 or above).  Each participant should submit no more than two entries depicting marine life or marine environment in the form of paper-cutting, paper-engraving, paper-ripping, cut and paste, monochromatic paper-cutting, colored engraving and cutting.
