The 8th Inter-school Competition of Study Projects on Hong Kong's History and Culture, jointly organised by the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture, has come to a successful conclusion and the prize presentation ceremony was held today (September 25).
The competition has been held for several years, with the aims of enhancing students' knowledge of Hong Kong's history and culture, and encouraging them to learn actively outside class through thorough investigation and research into the relationship of historical developments and changes in society.
The theme for this year's competition is "Honour and Disgrace: The Historical Development of China and Hong Kong in the Past Century". Participants are required to investigate and research the history of China and Hong Kong from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century, exploring the unique historical status of Hong Kong from different perspectives.
A total of 33 reports from 22 secondary schools were received. Divided into two sections, junior division (Form 1 to Form 3) and senior division (Form 4 to Form 7), the participants were in groups of two to 10 students, working under the guidance of one or two teachers. The submissions had to be mainly in written form, though they could be supplemented by videos, cassette tapes, photo albums, computer games or a website, etc.
The written reports were judged according to relevance of the theme, systematic use of collected materials, objectivity in analysis, citation of bibliography and footnotes and overall assessment of quality. The outstanding teams were selected for a face-to-face interview. The award winners were selected according to the students' degree of participation and their written report.

Third prize - "Frontier Restricted Area and the Relationship between China and Hong Kong", by Carmel Pak U Secondary School.
Merit awards - "The Rise and Fall of Hong Kong's Banking: The Historical Development of China and Hong Kong", by La Salle College; and "The Latest 60 Years: Fellowship between China and Hong Kong", by Cheung Chau Government Secondary School.
Junior division

First prize - "Hong Kong Immigrants from Guangdong in the 1970s and 80s", by Carmel Pak U Secondary School.
Second prize - "The Seamen's Strike: The Development of Labour Movement in Hong Kong and China", by Carmel Pak U Secondary School.
Third prize - "National Sentiment during the 8-Year War of Resistance against Japanese", by Carmel Pak U Secondary School.
Merit awards - "The Trembling Ground", by Diocesan Girls' School; and "Relationship between China and Hong Kong – A Study of the Centennial History of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce", by Lui Cheung Kwong Lutheran College.
The awarded projects will be exhibited at the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture from September 27 until October 8.
