YWCA Orchestra to perform notes of love from Chinese music
**********************************************************

National Class One Conductor Qu Chunquan will lead The Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra next month in a concert of well-known Chinese love songs, featuring zheng soloist Luo Jing.

The orchestra will perform the zheng concerto from "The Butterfly Lovers"; zheng soloist Luo Jing will play "Spring on the Miao Mountain"; other songs include "Love Story of the Wagon-driver", "Who is My Beloved", "Forget Him", "Love in Hong Kong Suite No.3", "The Moon Represents My Heart" and "Halfmoon Serenade"

Qu Chunquan is an internationally renowned conductor and composer. He was Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Conductors' Association and Principal Conductor of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra. At present he is the Principal Conductor of the Fo-Guang-Shan "Sounds of the Human World" Chinese Orchestra and Artistic Adviser to the Taipei Chinese Orchestra. He also teaches at the Taiwan University of Arts and Taiwan Normal University. His many engagements include guest-conducting orchestras around the world and adjudicating at various international music competitions. He has received many awards for his outstanding achievements, performances and compositions from the Ministry of Culture, the Department of Radio and Television (now the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television), and the City of Shanghai.

Luo Jing trained in the Department of Folk Music at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and graduated ahead of the scheduled programme in 1995 with distinguished results. She joined the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra as a zheng soloist in the same year. In 2002, she joined the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Since 2003, she has held teaching positions in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, the Hong Kong Institute of Education, and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Her zheng performance demonstrates both a consummate mastery of the stylistics of the Zhejiang school and an assured command of the styles of other prominent zheng schools. With a gracefulness that eludes frailty and a brilliance that defies feminine charm, Luo's playing has a relaxed, refreshing and quiet appeal.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert by the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra will be at 3pm on October 24 (Sunday), at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall.
